Packing for an Alaskan Cruise

Summer is almost here, which means that Alaskan Cruise season is in full swing! In fact, my own family will be embarking on an Alaskan Cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas in just two weeks (be sure to follow along on Facebook!).

If you’ve ever sailed on an Alaskan Cruise or if you’re planning one in the near future, you’re probably aware that one of the biggest challenges is figuring out what to bring with you. Fortunately, we’ve got you covered with some “must-pack” suggestions (as well as some general tips for what to bring on any cruise). Read on!

Layers for Excursions

Temperatures in Alaska can fluctuate dramatically in the summer, so it’s important to be prepared for a variety of weather from cold and wet to warm and sunny. We’re each bringing a lightweight winter coat, a fleece jacket, and a basic hoodie. We’re also throwing in a few pairs of shorts, jeans and leggings, and a couple of long-sleeved AND short-sleeved shirts. Don’t forget the winter hats, ballcaps for sunny days, and gloves (I like the ones where the tops fold back to expose fingertips ~ perfect when you need to make a quick grab for your camera)!!

Clothing for Days at Sea

Days at sea are typically casual across the board, requiring not much more than bathing suits and t-shirts/shorts. On an Alaskan cruise, be sure to bring cover-ups and long pants for days at sea too…you never know what the weather will bring!

Evenings onboard can range from smart casual to formal. It’s always a good idea to check with your travel agent regarding your cruise line’s schedule, but you’ll typically need the following for eveningwear during a weeklong cruise: several smart casual outfits, one or two semi-formal outfits, and one formal outfit. For women, smart casual usually includes capri pants or slacks, blouses, and casual sundresses. For men, think polo shirts and khakis. For both genders, semi-formal clothes are typically items you’d wear as a guest to a wedding, and formalwear includes cocktail dresses and suitcoats (or even tuxedos if you want to get extra fancy!). Evenings in Alaska can get quite chilly, so be sure to bring a warmer jacket to dinner, just in case you feel like stepping outside to enjoy the view!

Miscellaneous Items

For an Alaskan cruise, binoculars are a must. And on every cruise, I always throw in a pop-up hamper or two, just to keep my family’s laundry situation under control in our stateroom. Although there will be TONS of onboard activities to keep your family busy, a deck of cards is always nice for downtime. And finally, don’t forget those all-important cruise documents and passports!
